There’s No House In The World Like This One In New Mexico

One of the most unusual houses in New Mexico is found in Albuquerque. It’s the residence and studio of the architect, Bart Prince.

The curved portion of this passive-solar building contains the house’s bedrooms, while the tower serves as a library and storage area.

Although Prince grew up in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, adobe-style structures never appealed to him.

"Architecture, to me, is like music; it has a quality of mystery about it," Prince says.

This is apparent in the organic, atypical shapes he favors in his designs.

An example of this is the unusually-shaped Fu Residence (nicknamed The Snake House) in nearby Rio Rancho. Prince ensured it was elevated above the ground both for the views and so as not to disturb animals passing through the area.

Prince likes to design his unique homes from the inside out, usually starting with a chipboard model. He outlines his process in this video, produced by Dwell. The Bart Prince house appears at the end of the clip (at 3:44 minutes).
