While there are many unique and exciting hikes in the Land of Enchantment, this waterfall hike near Las Cruces takes you by rushing springs, historical sites, and plenty of amazing views. Although this hike is rated moderate, anyone should be able to take it on with a little bit of planning. If you’re looking for stunning views, interesting ruins and historical sites, and some of the best views in New Mexico, get ready to take on this astonishing hike that is truly one of a kind.
Welcome to Dripping Springs Trail! This beautiful hike is located inside the Dripping Springs Natural Area near Las Cruces.
At 2.7 miles, this trail isn't very long, but it's jam-packed with views. Nestled beneath the Organ Mountains, you'll be feeling like you're in another world.
Much of the trail is a steady incline, and the gravel is loose, so make sure to bring good hiking shoes and bring water. Upon this hike you'll pass many ancient ruins and pieces of history.
The first interesting piece of history you'll find is the Van Patten Mountain Camp, which was built in the 1800s to service the old hotel that we'll find later down the trail.
Keeping along the trail, you'll come across the Dripping Springs. These springs are all natural and if there's heavy rainfall, it's much more of a waterfall than a trickle. Even if the water isn't rushing heavily, these springs are impressive as they were built in 1892 to supply the nearby resort. The pond has dried up now, but this area used to be completely self sufficient.
Along the rest of the hike you'll pass other sites like the Dripping Springs Resort and Boyd Sanatorium. It's amazing to see so many cool pieces of history within one little hike.
Dripping Springs Trail is located inside Dripping Springs Natural Area just outside of Las Cruces.
